ALTEC 1-inch Driver Diaphragm
This is a diaphragm manufactured by Radian for 1-inch throat drivers such as the ALTEC 802/806/808/902/604.
Made of traditional aluminum alloy, it features a natural sound.
The Mylar film edge reduces resonance compared to metal tangential edges, resulting in a more natural sound quality and significantly increased power handling.
Impedance: 8Ω
Power Handling: 50W (continuous)
(Generally, this is listed as 100W.)
All Radian diaphragms are made by forming aluminum alloy sheets using a metal spinning technique (see second photo) and then undergoing special heat treatment. As shown in the third diagram (top), metal spinning results in a diaphragm that is thinner in the center and thicker around the edges, increasing strength for the same mass and creating an optimal shape for the diaphragm. Conventional stamped diaphragms, as shown in the diagram (below), have a thicker central section. This shape makes a significant difference in terms of resonance. Imagine pulling a rubber band with both hands and then moving your hands up and down. The rubber band corresponds to the diaphragm, and your hands correspond to the voice coil. In the stamped type, the center is heavy, so it's like having a weight attached to the middle of the rubber band. And this weight moves independently of the movement of your hands. This is resonance. Resonance not only worsens the frequency response but also causes intermodulation distortion. In the spinning method, it's equivalent to the rubber band being tightly stretched, and the diaphragm faithfully follows the movement of the voice coil. Radian's diaphragms have been proven to have less intermodulation distortion in FFT measurements. (Please refer to the measurement data below.)
The use of Mylar film edges, which eliminate unwanted reflections and resonances, also contributes to this excellent sound quality. Recently, the natural sound quality of aluminum, a material that differs from titanium and beryllium (which have negative environmental impacts), has been re-evaluated. It's recommended for those dissatisfied with the sound of newer drivers.
The screws for the internal wiring, which secure the diaphragm to the black clamp ring, are made of a relatively soft metal to ensure good contact. Therefore, please use a screwdriver of the appropriate size.
Also, you don't need to tighten them too much; just tighten them enough so that the Phillips head doesn't deform.
Image 4 above:
This chart shows the harmonic distortion characteristics when a 2kHz (voltage: 2V) sine wave is input to the JBL 2450J.
Image 5 above:
This shows the characteristics when only the diaphragm is replaced with a Radian 1245-16, using the same driver.
You can see that despite a 5dB increase in output at 2kHz, the 2nd/3rd harmonic distortion at 4kHz/6kHz has drastically decreased.
Furthermore, the ultra-harmonic distortion, a particular concern among audiophiles, is suppressed to an undetectable level.
Some people may feel that the treble is missing despite the increased sound pressure, but this is mostly due to mistaking harmonic distortion components for treble. Once calibration is complete and the low-distortion sound becomes the standard, it seems impossible to revert to the original setting.

This chart shows the intermodulation distortion characteristics when 2kHz and 2.5kHz sine waves are input to the JBL 2450J.
Image 7 above:
This shows the characteristics when only the diaphragm is replaced with a Radian 1245-16 using the same driver.
Here too, you can see that even though the output at 2kHz/2.5kHz has increased, the distortion due to intermodulation has drastically decreased.
This intermodulation distortion has a different effect than the harmonic components emitted from musical instruments, and therefore has a more detrimental impact than harmonic distortion.
