This is a non-firing replica of a Japanese Tanegashima matchlock pistol, styled after the handheld firearms used in Japan from around circa 1600 to 1800. The Tanegashima matchlock represents a significant chapter in Japanese military history, originating from the matchlock firearms introduced by Portuguese traders in the mid-16th century. These matchlocks were later adapted by Japanese gunsmiths and widely used through the Sengoku and early Edo periods as both battlefield arms and status symbols for mounted warriors.
Designed as a faithful reproduction, this piece mirrors the form and aesthetic characteristics of historic Tanegashima pistols sometimes referred to historically as bajō-zutsu which were compact firearms carried by samurai and horsemen.
Constructed with quality materials including wood and cast metal components, the replica captures the visual and mechanical style of the original design without functional firing capability.
