[A masterpiece kit that captivated model-making enthusiasts] Among the German tanks of World War II, the Panther is said to be the most superior in all aspects, including offensive power, defensive capabilities, and mobility. In the summer of 1941, the German army, advancing with spectacular victories, invaded the Soviet Union, where German tanks encountered the Soviet leader's latest tanks, the T34 and KV-1, for the first time. While the German army achieved successive victories thanks to its superior tank tactics, it became clear that the German main battle tanks of the time, the Panzer III and Panzer IV, could not compete with the powerful T34 and KV-1. Therefore, development of the Panther tank, the Panzer V, began in early 1942 as a new main battle tank with performance superior to those of its rivals. The Panther was developed by thoroughly studying the Soviet T34, incorporating many of its advantages. Mass production began in late 1942, and it began to see action on the front lines from mid-1943. It was equipped with a powerful, long-barreled 75mm gun, and the hull featured heavily sloped armor, reducing weight while increasing defensive strength. It was powered by a 700hp Maybach HL230 engine, twice as powerful as the Panther IV, and had a top speed of 55km/h, giving it excellent maneuverability. Approximately 6,000 Panthers were produced, the second-highest number of any German tank after the Panzer IV, and it served as the main battle tank of the latter half of the war. The Ausf. A was an improved version of the original Ausf. D, and production began in the summer of 1943.
