This is an Antique African short spear - San People - 19th century.
We believe this is 19th century, possibly early
20th century in date and is a short hunting spear. Unlike some of
the large examples which may have been made to be ornamental or ceremonial,
this is more likely to be a utilitarian spear.
This may be a spear of the San People of the Kalahari. The
San hunt by a method known as persistence hunting, is an ancient technique
where hunters chase animals—such as kudu or antelope—during the hottest part of
the day for several hours. The spear is only used to deliver the death blow
once the animal is exhausted. It is therefore a very lightweight spear which
the San can carry easily whilst running.
This spear is short and lightweight, easy to handle and
carry. The spear blade is a classic double edged leaf shape. It is somewhat crudely
manufactured compared with Western metal working and the cutting edge is now dull
through time, but it is clearly capable of holding a very fine edge and would
have been a lethal hunting tool.
The tail of the spear has a 12cm steel spike to balance the
spear. The balance point is about a third of the way back from the tip, clearly
made to be used.
This item has not undergone any restoration, it is
completely original. The metalwork has a lovely patina but no rust. The
hardwood shaft is fashioned from a single straight branch and is polished
through countless years of use. There are crude toolmarks on the tail of the
shaft where it has been thinned to fit into the socket of the iron counterbalance.
This is a really lovely item and would make an interesting
display piece.
