Original Rare Nike Mercurial Ronaldo R9 1998 World Cup SG boots size UK 10.5

These boots have been in my possession since new, I previously worked in a sports shop where I was able to get my hand on these. 

Design:

• Colorway: The Cup Final version was most famous in a striking Metallic Silver, with Blue and Yellow accents, reflecting Brazil’s national colors.

• Upper: Synthetic KNG-100 material, which was ultra-lightweight for its time. It was designed to mold to the foot and offered water resistance.

• Swoosh: Oversized Nike Swoosh in black on the lateral side — bold branding that became iconic.

• Soleplate: Clear molded studs for multi-directional traction, designed specifically for explosive acceleration — a perfect fit for Ronaldo’s devastating pace.

• Details: “R9” branding on the heel and tongue. Some editions had a subtle Brazilian flag detail.

Significance:

• This boot revolutionised football boot design — it prioritised lightweight speed, breaking from the heavy leather boots of the era.

• Ronaldo wore them in the 1998 World Cup final against France — despite Brazil’s shocking 0–3 loss, the boot became legendary for its futuristic look and association with R9’s brilliance.

Legacy:

The 1998 Mercurial paved the way for two decades of speed boots, influencing modern boots like the Mercurial Vapor, Superfly, and Air Zoom Mercurial. To this day, Nike frequently releases tribute versions of the original R9.
