Description: Oxford: At the Theatre, 1679. Quarto (approx. 7.75" x 6"). Begins with the Book of Common Prayer with printed title page (1679), ruled in red. Engraved general title page (1670) with a red-ruled architectural border featuring Moses, Aaron, Jeremiah, and Isaiah, and a view of the Theatre at the foot. Text ruled in red throughout in two column Roman font. With Apocrypha as issued. Printed New Testament title page (1679). Bound with the Whole Booke of Psalms (1679) by Sternhold and Hopkins with printed title page.

Collation: A-Z^8, Aa-Zz^8, Aaa-Bbb^8, Ccc^2 (Old Testament), A-K^8 (Apocrypha), A-P^8 (New Testament). Complete with both title pages.

Binding: Eighteenth century black goatskin. Covers paneled in gilt. Spine with five raised bands, gilt stamps to compartments, and the words “Holy Bible” lettered in gilt. All edges gilt. Green marbled endpapers.

Condition: Lightly rubbed to covers and joints. Corners lightly bumped. Text is notably crisp, clean, and bright throughout.

Provenance: Bookplates of George Downing Bowles and Samuel Stillingfleet to front pastedown and endpaper. Seventeenth through nineteenth century family records at beginning and end of Anne Stillingfleet (1681), grandmother of Dr. Edward Stillingfleet, Bishop of Worcester. Occasional marginal annotations in the New Testament. Final leaf with watercolor sketch on recto by Harry Stillingfleet of Worchester Cathedral.

Note: The second edition printed at Oxford and the first printed English Bible with dates in the margins. An attractive clean copy, that has been ruled in red throughout with excellent provenance.
