THE DIVINA COMMEDIA OF DANTE ALIGHIERI: CONSISTING OF THE INFERNO - PURGATORIO - AND PARADISO. Translated into English verse, with preliminary essays, notes, and illustrations, by the Rev. Henry Boyd. London: For T. Cadell Jun. and W. Davies, 1802. In three hardcover volumes. The books are roughly 8.5 x 5.5 inches in size.
Good condition. Soiling and scuffing to the boards and spines of each volume, with edge-wear to the boards of numerous chips, scuffs, bumps, etc., especially at the corners. Soiling to the text block edges. Volumes I and II are showing some splitting along the top few inches of the front joint. There's only a tiny bit of splitting on the front joint of Vol. III (none of the boards feel in danger of detaching on any of the books). Foxing, soiling, and waviness--sometimes heavy-- to the pages. Some pages have creases, mostly corner creases, and the last endpaper of Vol II has a long, fold-over crease. One page set in Vol. II extends a little beyond the text block, with creases along the fore-edge. Vol. I has some pencil notations on the front and rear pastedowns. The Vol. I binding is cracking between the first full page of text and the page opposite. But nothing has detached and the overall binding is still holding firm. The bindings of the other two volumes are firm. There is only one black-and-white illustration, being the frontispiece portrait of Dante in Vol. I.
A sound set in need of some repairs and conservation. This scarce title is the first English language edition of The Divine Comedy.
