Some reviews
I purchased my Pioneer SX-3900 new in 1981 in Corpus Christi, Texas. As it is now 2015, and I've just had it back from a Pioneer Service Centre that specialised in vintage equipment. I thought I'd have it checked out to see if might require some updating (it has never missed a beat...). My system has never been 'over-played', just thought I'd get it checked. They informed me 'this receiver was thoroughly inspected and they could find no evidence of overheating and they only had to re-soldered a couple of wires (due to removal/inspection). And performed as good as the day it was manufactured'.
They tested the re-assembled unit only to determine it produced 142 watts at 8 ohms, with only .00325% distortion on the three frequencies tested.
Not bad for a 30+ year old Receiver...
Too bad build quality of that era isn't practiced now, but that's capitalism. But then again, nobody would need to replace their HiFi's...not to forget the SX-3900 is BIG and heavy.
Sadly, I've just purchased a complete well cared for Pioneer 'Urushi' Reference system, so looking for an appreciative new 'Keeper
