상품 설명
Armstrong 426 Stereo Tuner-Amplifier
This is one of three of these units that I have for sale, but they're rare and don't come up for sale too often, especially in fully serviced, ready to go condition as this and the other two I'm offering are.
I have serviced this carefully, and on this one, I have prioritised originality - I have had to replace all of the ancient electrolytic capacitors, there's no way around that, but I have tried to keep the rest completely as it left the factory back in the 1960s.
As vintage equipment, approaching 60 years old, I hope that you can appreciate
that this is not like buying modern gear made in the last 20, 30 or even
40 years or so. Please treat this sort of equipment as akin to buying
an old classic car - even the best-restored classic cars will never have
modern fit and finish or refinement, and it's the same with vintage
electronics. Some of the features and functionality that were
commonplace 60 years ago can feel a little alien to a modern audience.
But I'm a huge fan of these - they have a way with music that I find
missing with modern gear, and I run a 526 tuner-amplifier as my 'daily
driver'. I will look after you if you decide to 'join the club' - happy
to support you post sale now, and into the future.
Sound quality is excellent - fast, punchy and musically very involving. These are at home with any type of music you care to play and really shine with a good turntable. The radio tuner is super too. Please note - the phono sockets for the magnetic cartridge input have a switch inside; for a reliable connection, you ideally need to use vintage 'long reach' phono plugs or you might run into trouble with an intermittent connection - this only affects the magnetic cartridge input (P.U. 2). The other units that I have for sale incorporate a modification to address this, but this unit is totally standard and original.
This is in pretty good cosmetic condition overall, especially when considering its age, but there are some blemishes - please do consult the photos and use the zoom function so you have a good idea of what's on offer.
I will supply this with a reprinted copy of the original instruction manual, an FM ribbon antenna to get you going and one of my custom loudspeaker plug adapters, normally sold for £30, that simplify the use of modern plugs and cables, so you'll have everything needed to simply plug in and enjoy. I will also supply a bag of the original, displaced parts and a report
detailing the service undertaken and date; this should help to maintain
the value of your investment in the event you wanted to sell in future.
I would really prefer a local sale, where you can collect and I can
demonstrate the item to you (or I'll deliver to you within around a 20
mile radius) - with vintage gear, it's easier and you'll have the
benefit of my support just round the corner. I will, however, ship
within the UK. In either case, as I have always done with sales of gear,
if something isn't right when you receive the item or it develops a
genuine fault within a reasonable time period, I will look after you but
please also be fair and honest with me - see my returns policy at the
bottom of this listing.
What follows is a technical description of all the work undertaken on this.
Technical Notes
- FULL recap - all of the crusty old electrolytic capacitors have been replaced with good quality, branded items (mainly Panasonic / Epcos) For some of the old chassis-mount items, I have fabricated plastic brackets for the replacements, for a nice neat job;
- Power supply trimmer pot replaced with a good quality Bourns item and rail voltage carefully adjusted to set power amplifier quiescent current;
- Power supply rectifier diodes uprated - as part of the full recap, the main reservoir capacitor has been increased in value slightly, so I wanted to be sure the rectifier was adequate, the originals would have been marginal, by my calculations;
- The tuner wasn't working properly when I bought it, now repaired - the issue was to do with 'tin whiskers' affecting most of the transistors in the tuner, a very common problem on these. On this one, rather than replace the original transistors with Soviet equivalents, I have repaired the original transistors, one by one, and refitted (it is possible to treat the tin whiskers!);
- All edge connectors cleaned with IPA and checked for security;
- All switches (except mains switch) and rotary controls cleaned with deoxidising fluid;
- Panel illumination sorted, all bulbs working;
- Cabinet cleaned.
I have had the receiver running in my main system for a week and everything is working well, so it's ready to be enjoyed by its next keeper.
Thanks for looking - feel free to drop me a message if you have any questions.
Returns Policy
I
cannot offer an open-ended period of guarantee on any equipment like
this, however, I will always strive to look after you and you're
entitled to expect that you will receive it working correctly as
advertised and that it doesn't pack up the following week. As with all
sales on eBay, you're protected and I will accept returns but please be
honest -
- If you decide, upon trying the item, that it's not really for you, return within 30 days is no problem but please make sure it comes back to me in the exact same condition as supplied to you, with all accessories as originally supplied, and preferably in the packaging it was supplied to you in. Please also state the honest, correct reason for return.
- If the item arrives damaged, please contact me immediately - I will expect 'damage in transit' claims to be made within a couple of days of confirmed receipt, unless we make other arrangements prior to sale;
- If the unit develops a fault within 30 days of sale, you can return for a refund or repair - I may, at my discretion, withdraw the option of repair if the item is deemed beyond repair.
Please contact
me first before initiating any return! Please let me try to help and
resolve any issue first - I have had a couple of instances where the
equipment supplied was not at fault and after clarifying, I was able to
help the purchaser resolve and then enjoy their purchase.
In all cases, returns must be made using the standard eBay procedure, and I will require photographic evidence of the condition of items prior to your sending back - all faces of the equipment as well as the packaging. This is to cover us if the unit suffers damage in transit back to me.
If
any return appears to be fraudulent or an abuse of the standard eBay
policies and procedures, whilst I will still issue a refund within the
statutory time period allowed, I reserve the right to report such
behaviour to eBay. Please, remember I'm not a large corporate business,
treat me how you'd like to be treated yourself. Thanks!
Feedback
I aim to get things right first time with gear that I sell, and the
overwhelming majority of sales have so far been trouble-free, but as
it's older vintage equipment, occasionally things can go wrong - if
something needs looking at, please reach out to me and give me a chance
to put it right for you! If you're happy with your purchase, positive
feedback is much appreciated and will be reciprocated.
About Me
I'm an experienced, degree-qualified electronics engineer. I like to restore good quality equipment to good working order and offer for sale. All work is done properly using parts that match or exceed original manufacturer's specification but I tend to stick to original manufacturer's designs, except in obvious cases where minor tweaks will improve reliability. I'm always happy to discuss any aspect of the item for sale if you have any queries - please reach out via eBay messaging.
