Legendary KLH Model Twenty One table radio in fully restored condition, looking and sounding amazing. This particular example has a cabinet made with a single piece of walnut veneer, matched from top to bottom! The new grill looks sharp with the walnut cabinet and brown-trimmed knob faces, and it's made of acoustically transparent material for best possible sound.
The 21 is well known for excellent tuning performance and a full range sound that seems impossible given the size of the walnut cabinet (12" x 7" x 6"). These were sold in Hi-Fi shops, not department stores, and still have a following to this day. Despite the very high quality, time takes a toll on these radios, many have yellowed knobs, dirty and damaged grills, scratched or marked faceplates, and damaged or dulled wood cabinets. Sound quality deteriorates over time as capacitors age, electrical components drift out of spec, and cabinet seals fail.
Electrical and sonic restoration has been performed using the original KLH service documents as well as years of experience restoring KLH products from this era. Work done includes:
-Replacement of all electrolytic capacitors with high quality equivalents from Nichicon and Panasonic
-Replacement of out of spec driver transistors with modern, high quality equivalents
-Replaced damaged power cord
-Cleaned and lubricated tuning capacitor
-Vol/Bass/Treb controls have all been cleaned with appropriate DeOxit products, as have the rear ouputs
-Replacement of all cabinet seals (improves bass response)
-Redoped speaker surround as per KLH service documents and using proper sealer from Vintage AR
-Full electrical check using original service manual
-Tuner dial has been aligned for accurate tuning
Cosmetic restoration includes:
-Old dull finish removed from walnut cabinet, imperfections filled
-Multiple coats of Tung Oil finish applied to bring out the walnut grain and protect the wood (radio & speaker)
-Howard's Feed N Wax applied for protection and shine
-Removal of damaged grill, new grill attached
-Knobs cleaned
-Faceplate cleaned
-New feet
While there are still small signs of age and use (note the filled spots on the top back of cabinet), the overall look of both the radio and speaker is mint and fresh.
The Model Twenty One has three outputs on the back, two are for attaching an auxiliary speaker (in conjunction with the radio speaker, or as a standalone) and one is a tuner output. Another nice feature of this radio is the power cord doubles as the antenna, no need to hang an ugly antenna on the wall unless you're in a rural area or trying to pull in distant or weak stations.
This set will be very well packed for shipping, and all work is warrantied for 90 days.
