Offered is the antique book "The Works of Benjamin Franklin, Volume V", published in 1840 by Hilliard, Gray and Co. in Boston. The book, one volume out of 10 total in the set, contains printed versions of some of Franklin’s political papers written during and after the American Revolution as well as his letters and papers on electricity (see photos #3-#7 for contents). This is an early, possibly first, edition of this material. There a few illustrations. Although there are numerous volumes of this set for sale on eBay, at the time of original listing I could not find any other copies of Volume V of this edition for sale on eBay or anywhere else.
The book is approx. 9 3/4" x 6 1/2” and contains 516 pages. It is in good condition for its age. The hard cover has moderate wear overall, with heavier wear at the top of the spine. The gold words on the spine are still partially visible, although there is considerable surface blotchiness. There is no cracking inside the back cover but some slight cracking is just beginning in the front. The white endpapers have yellowed and have moderate foxing and light staining and stray marks. The paper layer in the back has partially separated from the backing and there is a small (less than 1” diameter) hole in the paper. I see no missing pages and all are fairly well-attached to the binding. One of the blank pages in the front has a very short edge tear but otherwise I see no torn pages. They have yellowed considerably and there is moderate foxing on most pages, with heavier foxing present on a few pages. I see no writing in the book.
