Softcover, first edition, eighteen illustrations. Creasing and marks on front and back covers, fraying of the stapled spine, signature top right-hand of front cover. Inside, though, is a remarkably clear, clean, and unmarked copy with no loose or dog-eared pages. 58pp. Compiled by E.A. Wallis Budge, curator from the Department of Egyptian and Assyrian Antiquities, the pamphlet recounts the discovery in 1853, at the ancient site of Nineveh in modern-day Iraq, of the clay tablets bearing the Babylonian epic of the hero Gilgamesh and the story, as told to Gilgamesh, of the Great Flood. Upon its translation in 1872, the story convinced many of the historical foundations to the Biblical Flood and Noah's Ark. Wallis Budge describes the library of the great king Ashburnipal, retells the story, and offers a translation of (what were then) the known tablets.
