Apple pulled the 512GB option from the Mac Studio configurator in March 2026, citing DRAM supply constraints. Tom's Hardware reported that even Apple couldn't get the chips. There is simply no way to source 512GB RAM for the forseeable future.
The next Mac Studio has slipped to October 2026
Mark Gurman's Power On newsletter for Bloomberg (April 19, 2026) reports the next Mac Studio pushed from summer to October 2026 at the earliest, held up by the same memory shortage. 
128GB and 256GB configurations are no longer available either
As of April 11, 2026, Mac Studio configurations with 128GB and 256GB of memory were pulled from Apple's US online store and marked "currently unavailable" — no delivery estimate, no way to order. Only the 96GB base M3 Ultra and smaller M4 Max configurations are left. Mid-tier Mac minis are quoting 16–18 week waits. Desktop supply with high RAM configurations has completely dried up.
Day-one orders arrive in 2027
Even if October ships on time (Bloomberg's headline uses the word "may"), Apple's top-memory configurations typically have 8–12 week waits at launch. That puts a day-one order's realistic delivery around late 2026 to Q1 2027. Apple hasn't confirmed 512GB comes back at all. The announced M5 Max tops out at 128GB.

Why This Hardware
V4 Flash at native precision is ~156GB. A 1M context window eats memory fast — the only consumer desktop that can hold Flash's weights and a full 1M context is a 512GB Mac Studio.

V4 Pro at 1.6T parameters runs ~880GB. Too big for one Studio. Two clustered over Thunderbolt 5 fits it. See The Upgrade Path below.

The Memory Market
Apple built this unit using DRAM it had contracted for back in 2024 and early 2025. That same memory can't be sourced at the same price today.
DRAM contract prices
TrendForce has Q1 2026 DRAM contract prices up 90–95% quarter-over-quarter — the biggest jump on record. Samsung raised contract prices 30–60% between September and November 2025. NAND is up 55–60% over the same stretch.
Supply is going to AI datacenters
IDC projects 70% of 2026 memory production goes to AI datacenters. Micron shut down its consumer Crucial brand to focus on HBM. The WSJ reports Apple execs on extended hotel stays in Seoul negotiating long-term DRAM contracts. IDC calls this a "permanent strategic reallocation" of global silicon.
Shortage expected through 2027–2028
SK Hynix's CEO puts the shortage through late 2027. TeamGroup's GM expects serious relief only in 2028, when new fab capacity comes online. The SK Group chairman said it could last until 2030. Even if Apple wanted to build more 512GB units, the DRAM isn't available at the prices Apple paid for this one.
The Upgrade Path
The Mac Studio has five Thunderbolt 5 ports, and macOS 26.2 added RDMA over Thunderbolt — which lets clustered Macs address each other's memory with under 50μs of latency. With EXO 1.0, two Studios together work as a single 1TB pool of unified memory. Four of them, 2TB. That's enough to run trillion-parameter models like DeepSeek V4 Pro (1.6T parameters, ~880GB) or Kimi K2.6 (1T parameters) locally, on hardware that lives on a desk.

The Alternative
Matching this much addressable memory on GPUs means four or more datacenter cards. Four H200s alone list at $124,000 to $128,000 before chassis, networking, or cooling. They pull over 2,000 watts combined and need datacenter conditions to run. This is a desktop pulling 215 watts.
Open-weight models keep outgrowing consumer hardware. DeepSeek V4 Flash at native precision needs 156GB plus room for its 1M-token context. GLM-5.1 at 4-bit needs 377GB. Kimi K2.6 at native INT4 needs 550GB. Qwen3.5-397B at 8-bit needs 400GB. Very few machines outside a datacenter can hold any of these, and 512GB unified memory is one of them.
Apple stopped selling the 512GB configuration in March. Bloomberg reports the next Mac Studio has slipped to October, and Apple hasn't said whether 512GB will return at all. The models keep getting bigger. The hardware isn't keeping pace.
Apple doesn't publish unit-level sales numbers, but the 512GB option was the top SKU of an already niche machine and was only on sale for twelve months. Estimates put worldwide production under 10,000 units. This is one of the last still sealed in its box.
