The Beogram CD50 was Bang & Olufsen's very first CD player — introduced in 1985 as the disc source for the iconic Beosystem 5000 stacking system, alongside the Beomaster 5000, Beocord 5000, and Beogram 5005 turntable. Designed to match Jacob Jensen's sculptural Beosystem 5000 aesthetic perfectly, the CD50 was a substantial and technically ambitious machine built around an imported Japanese mechanism with a 3-beam laser pickup, full 16-bit Burr-Brown DAC decoding, and 4× oversampling at 88.2 kHz — specifications that were genuinely advanced for the period.
One of the CD50's most distinctive features was its inverted disc loading — the CD is placed face-down in the motorised drawer, a design choice driven by early industry speculation about laser safety regulations. The drawer opens at a touch, closes with light pressure or via the Play control, and automatically ejects if the disc is inserted incorrectly. Datalink integration allowed full remote control via the Master Control Panel 5000, and RCA phono outputs alongside the DIN connection made the unit usable with non-B&O equipment.
This example is offered as spares or repair. The unit powers on but does not play CDs, and the CD flap often sticks when opening. The sticking drawer is a well-known and common fault on the CD50, typically caused by a degraded drive belt — a recognised restoration task for which service documentation and belt kits are available. Sold strictly as described.
