Unlock the World with this Classic Vivitar 19mm f/3.8 Wide-Angle Lens! (Minolta MD Mount)
Are you a photography enthusiast looking for that unique vintage character? Or a modern mirrorless shooter seeking an affordable, compact ultra-wide prime? Look no further! Up for sale is a fantastic example of the highly regarded Vivitar 19mm f/3.8 manual focus wide-angle lens, designed for the beloved Minolta MD/MC mount.
This isn't just any old lens; it's a piece of photographic history known for delivering impressive results and offering a distinct perspective that modern lenses often struggle to replicate.
Please see photos for condition of lens, plus some sample images I've taken using it adapted to a Sony A7i.
I bought this lens originally to see if I would use an ultra-wide, before commiting to the more expensive Minolta MD version. As I liked it, I took the plunge on the Minolta 20/2.8. This is now surplus to requirements and deserves to be used.
Condition of Lens:
- Optics: The glass is clean and clear with no haze, fungus, or scratches. There are a few minor dust specks internally, common for a lens of this age, but they do not affect image quality.
- Barrel: The metal barrel is in excellent condition with minimal signs of use, primarily light cosmetic scuffs consistent with age.
- Functionality: The focus ring turns smoothly with appropriate damping, and the aperture blades are clean, snappy, and free of oil.
- Mount: Minolta MD mount is clean and intact.
What's Included:
- Vivitar 19mm f/3.8 Manual Focus Lens (Minolta MD Mount)
- Generic front lens cap
- Generic rear lens cap
A Brief History & Why It's Special:
- Release Era: Introduced in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Vivitar 19mm f/3.8 quickly became a popular choice for photographers seeking a high-quality, ultra-wide perspective without the premium price tag of first-party lenses.
- Original Price & Value: While exact launch prices varied, these lenses were significantly more accessible than their Minolta, Canon, or Nikon counterparts. They offered incredible value, making wide-angle photography attainable for many.
At its heart, the Vivitar 19mm f/3.8 employs a robust 5 elements in 5 groups optical formula. This relatively simple yet effective design for an ultra-wide lens of its era contributed significantly to its compact size and affordability, without sacrificing its renowned character. While it delivers excellent center sharpness, this classic optical pathway also imparts a unique vintage rendering, offering a pleasing contrast and that sought-after "film look" that many photographers cherish. It's a testament to Vivitar's engineering that they could achieve such a wide perspective with this elegant design.
Performance & Ratings:
- Compact & Robust: Users consistently praised its solid, all-metal construction and remarkably compact size for an ultra-wide prime, making it easy to carry.
- Sharpness & Character: While it's a vintage lens (and thus shouldn't be compared to modern, optically perfect designs), it's highly regarded for its excellent center sharpness when stopped down slightly (f/5.6-f/8). It produces images with pleasing contrast and rich color, often described as having a unique "vintage charm" or "pop."
- Great for Landscapes & Street: Its 19mm focal length is perfect for expansive landscapes, architectural shots, and immersive street photography.
- Quirks of the Era: Like many ultra-wide lenses from its time, you might observe some barrel distortion (easily correctable in post-processing) and a touch of corner softness wide open. These characteristics are part of its unique signature and often embraced by photographers looking for a non-clinical aesthetic.
Why Buy This Lens Today?
- Versatile Ultra-Wide: Perfect for stunning landscapes, tight interiors, creative street scenes, and unique portraits.
- Manual Focus Fun: Reconnect with the craft of photography with its smooth, precise manual focus ring.
- Adaptable: While designed for Minolta MD/MC SLRs, this lens can be easily adapted to a variety of modern mirrorless camera systems (Sony E-mount, Fujifilm X-mount, Micro Four Thirds, Canon RF, Nikon Z) with an inexpensive adapter, unlocking its potential on today's digital sensors.
- Classic "Look": Achieve that sought-after vintage aesthetic with excellent color rendition and unique character that only classic glass can provide.
